Character Designer

Position Overview

As the Lead Character Designer at Space Whale, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of our projects. Your responsibilities will include designing characters and overseeing their creation from concept to final animation. Your extensive experience in character design, animation workflows, knowledge of production pipelines and file formats, and the ability to prepare character cutouts for animators will be key to our success.

Key Responsibilities

• Character Design: the heart of our creative endeavor, the Character Design aspect of this role is of paramount importance. We are seeking an exceptional Lead Character Designer who possesses a deep understanding of anatomy, combined with the ability to craft captivating characters in a variety of styles, particularly anime. Your character designs should not only be visually appealing but also versatile, allowing characters to be portrayed in dynamic and engaging positions. Your character designs will be the cornerstone of our projects, defining the visual narrative and creating memorable, relatable, and visually striking personas.Character Cutouts: Prepare character cutouts, ensuring they are animator-friendly and optimized for seamless integration into animations.
• Concept Art: Produce concept art and illustrations to visualize character ideas and establish the visual direction.
• Production Pipeline: Collaborate with the team to ensure efficient character design workflows within the production pipeline, including an understanding of how animators work and effective file format management.

• Base knowledge of file formats commonly used in production processes, ensuring effective communication and file sharing within the team.
• Ability to express ideas freely and creatively, contributing to the overall creative process.
• Willingness to accept and implement constructive feedback on your design work, fostering collaboration and growth.

Additional Skills (Preferred but Not Required)

• Base knowledge of frame-by-frame animation pipelines.
• Familiarity with spine animations, enriching our animation capabilities.
• Experience with live 2D animations, adding another dimension to our creative possibilities.
